Resilience to Flooding: A Comparison of Modern and Traditional Buildings in London, England

This research proposal examines flood resilience in London by comparing how modern and traditional buildings respond to flooding events. It focuses on key factors such as construction materials, architectural design, structural performance, and post-flood recovery processes to understand differences in damage levels and recovery time. Through a qualitative comparative approach, the study seeks to identify how resistance- and tolerance-based design strategies influence building performance in flood-prone areas. The research aims to address existing gaps in building-level flood resilience studies by providing practical insights into how different construction approaches cope with increasing flood risks driven by climate change and urbanisation. By drawing on professional perspectives and site observations, the study intends to generate evidence-based recommendations that can inform building design, retrofit strategies, and planning decisions. Ultimately, the findings are expected to support more resilient, sustainable, and climate-adaptive urban development in London and similar cities.
